Vegan BLT Sandwich with Tempeh
The BLT is a popular sandwich that is named after it’s primary ingredients – bacon, lettuce, and tomato. Since the BLT is a very simple sandwich, it is easily customizable. There are now several variations of the sandwich, such as the BLAT (bacon, lettuce, avocado, tomato), the BLET (bacon, lettuce, egg, tomato), the BLAST (bacon, lettuce, avocado, shrimp, tomato), and many more.
But today I am keeping it simple and I am going to show you how to veganize the classic, yet delicious, BLT 🥓🌱🍅
The key to a good vegan BLT is a bacon substitute that has a smoky flavor and a crispy texture. There are many vegan bacon alternatives that you can buy at the store, but I prefer to make my own at home. I have seen many veganized BLT sandwiches made with coconut bacon, tofu bacon, and even eggplant bacon! But my favorite thing to use in place of real bacon is tempeh bacon.
Tempeh bacon is not as crispy as real bacon, but it has an amazing sweet yet smoky taste that makes this vegan BLT feel like the real thing! Plus, it’s healthier 😏
I hope you make this amazing sandwich!!!
Ingredients for a Vegan BLT Sandwich
- Tempeh bacon: sweet and smokey tempeh bacon makes this BLT totally vegan! Tempeh is high in protein and makes this sandwich very satiating.
- Lettuce: for a satisfying crunch.
- Tomato: for a fresh and juicy bite.
- Vegan mayonnaise: sub for hummus if you don’t have vegan mayo.
- Bread of choice: gluten-free, if necessary
How to make a Vegan BLT Sandwich
I think we all know how to make a sandwich! This sandwich takes just about 5 minutes to assemble.
- Toast your bread. Most sandwiches taste better toasted, and this BLT is no exception. Do not skip this step! I don’t own a toaster, so I toast my bread in a pan on the stove.
- Assemble the sandwich. Spread the vegan mayo on one slice of bread, then layer on the lettuce, tomato, and tempeh bacon. Cover with the other slice of bread to complete the sandwich.
- Enjoy! Serve immediately, or pack up the sandwich for lunch.
