Vegan Mushroom Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls
I don’t know if it was just a Pennsylvania thing, but philly cheesesteaks were always on my school lunch menu growing up. And they were so nasty, it was the only lunch the school served that I literally refused to touch. I very vividly remember being served a hot dog bun topped with a dry, thin piece of meat and a half melted slice of American cheese. Hard pass.
I went vegetarian before I ever tried a proper philly cheesesteak, but I don’t feel like I’m missing out because I have something better – a vegan mushroom philly cheesesteak! In egg roll form! Yum. These baked egg rolls are totally vegan and totally delicious.
Ingredients
- Vegan egg roll wraps: I use the Nasoya vegan egg roll wraps. Egg roll wrappers typically have egg in them, but if you’re not vegan you use any egg roll wrappers you can find.
- Cremini mushrooms: I think cremini mushrooms have the best taste, but if you only have white mushrooms on hand, they will also work.
- Shredded vegan mozzarella cheese: I like to use Daiya mozzerella in this recipe. But traditionally, philly cheese steaks are made with provolone cheese, so if you have access to the Follow Your Heat Provolone Cheese Slices, you can cut those up and use them for the most authentic experience.
- White onion
- Green bell pepper
- Vegan worcestershire sauce: I use The Wizards Sauces brand, but if you can’t find it, you can use soy sauce instead.
- Balsamic vinegar
- Oil: for sautéing, sub with a splash of water if oil-free
- Salt and pepper
Wonton wrappers vs egg roll wrappers
Nasoya has vegan wonton wraps as well as vegan egg roll wraps. The main difference between the two is that the wonton wrappers are smaller and a bit thinner. I definitely suggest buying the egg roll wrappers for this recipe. If you have wonton wraps and are looking to make wontons instead, I have a delicious Vegan Mushroom Cream Cheese Wonton recipe.
How to make Mushroom Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls
Start by sautéing the onions, mushrooms, salt, and pepper until the onions are translucent. Then add the green bell peppers, garlic, worcestershire sauce, and balsamic vinegar. Sauté until the green peppers have softened. Raise the heat and cook until all the liquid has evaporated – you don’t want the mixture to be too wet, or your egg rolls might get soggy!
How to wrap egg rolls
- Place one egg roll wrap at a time on a clean surface. Scoop 1 tablespoon of cheese followed by 2 tablespoons of the vegetable mixture onto the center of the wrap.
- Keep a small bowl of water nearby and use it as “glue” to hold the egg roll wrapper corners together. Typically you would use egg to seal the edges, but I find that water works fine. Use your finger to wet the corners of the egg roll wrapper before rolling.
- Fold the bottom corner up and over the filling, then fold in each side.
- Roll the egg roll the rest of the way up. Wrap tightly, pushing out any air bubbles.
How to bake egg rolls
I don’t like cooking with a ton of oil, so I prefer baking the egg rolls over frying them. To bake, preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Lay the egg rolls out on a baking tray lined with parchment paper or a reusable silicone mat, seam side down. Spray the egg rolls with a little oil for extra crispiness. Bake for 20 minutes until crispy, flipping halfway through cooking.
How to fry egg rolls
Heat up 1/2 inch of neutral tasting oil (like vegetable, canola, or sunflower oil) in a pan over medium high heat. Once hot, place as many egg rolls that can comfortably fit in the pan seam side down. Cook 1-2 minutes on each side, until golden brown.
What better way to enjoy some philly cheesesteak egg rolls than with a cheesy vegan sauce? I like serving these with this 5 Minute Vegan Cheese Sauce. These egg rolls also taste amazing with ketchup (but I think everything tastes better with ketchup).
How to store these egg rolls
These vegan egg rolls are best eaten fresh, but they can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge up to about 4 days.
How to reheat egg rolls
The best way to reheat egg rolls is in the oven. Preheat the oven to 350 F, and bake thawed egg rolls about 10 minutes, flipping half way, until heated through.
Can egg rolls be frozen?
I have not tried freezing these egg rolls, but I imagine they would freeze well. After cooking the egg rolls, let them cool completely. Then place them on a parchment-lined tray and pop into the freezer until frozen all the way through, about 3-4 hours. Transfer the frozen egg rolls into a freezer bag for future use.

- Place one egg roll wrap at a time on a clean surface. Scoop ~1 tablespoon of cheese followed by ~2 tablespoons of the vegetable mixture onto the center of the wrap.
- Keep a small bowl of water nearby and use it as “glue” to hold the egg roll wrapper corners together. Use your finger to wet the corners of the egg roll wrapper before rolling.
- Roll the bottom corner up and over the filling, fold in each side, and then roll the rest of the way up. Wrap tightly, pushing out any air bubbles.
- To bake the egg rolls: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Place egg rolls seam side down on a baking tray lined with parchment paper or a reusable silicone mat. Spray egg rolls with oil and bake for 20 minutes until crispy, flipping halfway through cooking.
- To fry the egg rolls: heat up 1/2 inch of oil in a pan over medium high heat. Once hot, place as many egg rolls that can comfortably fit in the pan seam side down. Cook 1-2 minutes on each side, until golden brown.
- These egg rolls are best enjoyed fresh! Be careful, the cheese on the inside of the egg rolls will be very hot if eaten straight away. Enjoy on their own, or dipped into a vegan cheese sauce.
Notes
Reheat in the oven for best results. Preheat the oven to 350 F, and bake egg rolls about 10 minutes, flipping half way, until heated through.
If frying, I recommend using a neutral tasting oil like vegetable oil, canola oil, or sunflower oil.
